Multiplayer Comes to Android!

As promised, multiplayer Osmos has come to Android!

This is a free update, and includes 6 distinct arenas in which players can play against each other — both locally and online — in a mote-eat-mote absorption-fest of skill and strategy. This update also includes many audio/visual improvements.

Multiplayer Osmos

Local play is supported over Wi-fi, and online multiplayer is supported via Google Play’s new Game Services! (Osmos launched simultaneously with Google’s announcement a couple days ago, so no one can accuse us of twiddling our thumbs! ;-)) Players can share their achievements with their Google+ circles via this service as well.

Multiplayer details:

  • Play against your friends and enemies, locally or over the Internet.
  • 6 distinct Arenas: Ambient, Impasse, Solar, Warped Chaos, Epicycles, and introducing… Antimatter Impasse.
  • 18 new multiplayer achievements. (Along with a new single-player achievement.)
  • Optional handicap system to keep competition friendly. Be kind to young motes. :)

So what are you waiting for? Go show your friends who’s boss of the Blobiverse! We sincerely hope you enjoy it!

Many thanks to the fine folks at Apportable who did most of the “heavy lifting” in bringing multiplayer to Android. We couldn’t have done it without you! <3

Will the Humble Bundle version of Osmos receive this update?

@Matt: Yes! Coming to Humble Bundle players soon! (We were working nights to get it on Google Play in time! Catching up on the rest now…)

Oooh, fab! Thank you. It is easily the best game I have had from any bundle, and only one of two to survive on my phone for long.

It does remind me – when I ‘bought’ Osmos again when it was the free program of the day on the UK Amazon App Store, did you get any money?

Can we play multi player with different platforms. iOS and Android?

@Ian, thanks! regarding the Amazon store: not… directly. ;-)

@Philippe, not at the moment unfortunately: http://www.hemispheregames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=908

Any news on the humble bundle update?

@Liam, We were hoping to have it available already, but ran into a technical issue (now resolved) as well as a weird legal issue on Google Play: It appears some joker uploaded the Osmos tablet .apk from the Humble Bundle to Google Play, blocking our use of com.hemispheregames.osmos.tablet.humble as an identifier, at least temporarily. Sigh. (If we use another identifier, Humble customers running the current tablet build will get some weird behavior when they update.) Fingers crossed that it’s a matter of hours or days!

I’m with the Humble Bundle version as well. Can’t wait to have multiplayer mode in the game, it looks awesome.

    Great to hear!

Still very interested in knowing whether multiplayer will be coming to desktop platforms (I don’t have a mobile device, and this sounds like so much fun!).

humble bundle users feeling left out in the cold without mess on update. Twitter said “a few days” on the 27th if last month. any news would be better than no news.

Just finished the one player version and am exciting to play multiplayer, but I can’t find the update for the version I got from Amazon app store. My app is not shown to have an update available. Should it be available on Amazon?

@Rafael @anth: Really sorry about the delay (and radio silence) for Humble customers! We’re *still* trying to get things unblocked with Google unfortunately. Sigh. Believe me, we’re as frustrated as you are. We’re doing all we can though, and we’ll keep you posted on any news.

@John: Unfortunately “Google Play Game Services” isn’t available on Amazon’s tablets, so online multiplayer isn’t supported there yet. But, we do plan on at least adding local (device vs. device over wifi) multiplayer in the near future. (Within a few weeks.)

@Cheeseness: No immediate plans on desktop multiplayer I’m afraid, though it may happen someday…
