I played through on iPad, then on iPhone so iPad ver was 1.6.0 Just updated to 1.6.3 and it's much easier now...

Important moves at all levels are expanding solar orbit and the contracting authority in your orbit. Touch the back of the Mote more orbit, or touch the front of the Mote do small orbit. It should only be done by tapping the side of the Mote small micro-adjustments to gather Motes passes.
