I'm confused - Orbit Levels

I can't seem to figure out the orbit levels. The only thing I seem to be able to do is push other motes away from me if they're too large. Maybe I'm just having a stupid moment, but I can't seem to modulate my speed or direction to change my outcome. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

When you are playing a Solar (Orbit) level, there is a line that goes through your mote which shows the path it is going to take over the next few seconds. As you eject mass, you will see that line change (and if it ever turns red, that means you are on a collision course with the wall or the giant attractor mote that you are orbiting). When I am playing these levels, I try to have that line intersect with the paths of other motes nearby, so that I will absorb them without having to make large changes to my orbit.
