Hi Eddy, my PC keeps crashing! It does it more on the Impasse levels than the others. I've recently been trying to do the first Impasse level that has anti-matter, and it crashes every time.

I have the Steam full version. I have tried running the game in not-fullscreen, it still crashes.

System stats are:
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234)
Video: ATI Radeon HD 3650 AGP
Sound: CMI8738 (on a PCI card)

Any ideas?

Oh the way the game crashes - video hangs, keyboard does not respond (pressing caps lock does not make the caps lock light come on) but the music keeps going. I have to restart the computer.

Thanks

@ Ktown: when you say the game "ground to a halt right before level S1-2", what exactly do you mean? (Did the game hang? Did the game crash? etc) Also, can you have a look in your Osmos.log file (it's in your Documents folder, under the Osmos directory) -- is there anything revealing at the end of the file?

@ spacebug: It sounds like your computer might be overheating -- does it hang every time on a specific level, or only after a certain amount of gameplay (e.g. it hangs after you've been playing for 20 minutes)? Make sure your computer is cooling properly (vents are clean, fan is running, etc). Are you running on a laptop? Which Imapsse level specifically are you playing when the game hangs? Is it the same level every time that hangs? If you lower the rendering detail or try running Osmos in a smaller window, does that help?

@ pravo: Have a look in your Osmos.log file (it's in your Documents folder, under the Osmos directory) -- is there anything revealing at the end of the file?

Thanks all!
Dave

Here is the screen shot.

Note: It is happening more frequently now. I install the full version on another computer and it works great. It almost feels like the demo didn't uninstall properly.

Also, when this screens comes up, sometimes a mouse click can make it disappear, but if it stays there, then I have to end the application using task manager.

Hi Dave,

Yeah, the video is "hanging" (if you mean that it is loading but at a greatly reduced pace). It is the same way the video was loading when I was having the original problem (before I switched by dual video card to single). It loads, but so slowly that it appears to have stopped.

I think I have found the Osmos log, as you suggested, although if there is something revealing, I'm afraid that I'm not the right crimedog for the job. Here is the last part of the log, from my most recent attempt to play the game (I finished the "ovarium" level, and then it "hangs" when I press spacebar to go to the next level):

Thanks again,

EDIT: I have since tried turning graphics to low (like spacebug), to no avail. I don't think that overheating is a problem (I vacuumed this week).

I turned graphics down to low, and it ran fine! I should probably give my computer a bit of a vacuuming too now you mention it :) It was hanging on several levels in different places, so not a problem with a specific level design.

Thanks for the reply.

Hi, I just bought Osmos on Steam. Whether making it use fullscreen mode or not, it gets past "loading sounds..." and then maybe the Hemisphere Games logo will briefly flash in before the game crashes.

System specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (@2.4 GHz)
4 GB DDR Ram
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
GeForce 9600 GSO 1 GB PCIe 1.0
Sound Blaster Audigy Sound Card
Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-Bit RC

My log file also doesn't show anything crashing on it...

Same problem as TheTourist314 ...
Having a crash after launching the game.
Configuration:
Windows 7 x64 RTM (yes! RTM, I'm a lucky MSDN subscriber guy)
6 GB RAM
GeForce 8800 GTX

running the game as win XP SP3 compatibility mode doesn't change anything.
same as running in windowed or full screen mode.
It says 'loading sounds' and then crash.

any ideas ?

thanks a lot!

Looks like y'all are having trouble with OpenAL. Try downloading the latest OpenAL installer from CreativeLabs here (the file is called oalinst.zip).
