For me, it's just crashing on startup. I tried all the other stuff and no dice. My laptop, also running Windows 7 x64, can play the game just fine with sound and everything, for some reason my desktop won't run it.

@ ktowngames : Okay, nosound does nothing. Try running with 'nosplash' (without the quotes of course) to start the game without the splash sequence -- does that do anything?

@ TheTourist314 : so specifying nosound to turn off the sound does nothing to prevent the startup crash for you? I'm also curious about the OpenAL version you're running -- maybe the latest OpenAL is buggy in Windows 7. Creative Labs has a program called ALCapsViewer (available here) -- what version is it reporting for you?

I'm on windows 7 32 bit and it crashes on launching. I launched with nosound and it works.

as for the openal32.dll it's version 6.14.357.24

Add me to the list of crashing at "Loading Sounds". Tried new Creative file, still crashes. The log stops immediately after "Looking for OpenAL devices." I have a Creative Labs sound card in the machine.

The "nosound" option *does* allow the game to be played. But the reason I bought it was for the audio

Okay, so disabling sound through "nosound" lets the game run, but the sound would be nice. According to ALCapsViewer, my OpenAL32.dll version is 6.14.357.24.

I installed the game on a laptop and had issues with OpenAL under Steam too.
Here is how I fixed it : download the non-steam demo directly from this site, install it, steam version now should be able to run.
You then can erase the non-steam demo version.

Thanks for the tip JazzAd! I've added this info to our FAQ. We bundle OpenAL with Osmos, and my suspicion is that the Osmos bundle under Steam is not getting a chance to install OpenAL correctly when the game is downloaded from Steam. We'll look into this. Thanks for your patience and help, everyone!

It seems to work when I boot into my bootcamp partition, but not on VMWare. I think it has something to do with the video emulation? Has anyone got it to work over VMWare Fusion?

Dave,

I posted a video so you can see the difference between fullscreen windowed vs fullscreen HW on the laptop.

The laptop has a fixed, unchangeable, LCD refresh rate of 60Hz in all resolutions. (All resolutions below 1920x1200 are 'emulated' in 1920x1200 anyway).
So when you visit the menu you mention, you only get 60Hz listed.
The fullscreen HW mode is flickering like crazy with tearing at random verticle positions
