Osmos won't start

Postby castu » Mon Jan 03, 2011 11:54 pm

Every time I try launching the game it takes me through the prompt that asks to check for updates and the one that wants me to run it in fullscreen. It never matters which I choose for either, the game never actually starts but my CPU usage still jumps from around 3% to 100% and if I try opening it again it says that a copy is already running. I have tried running it as admin, updated all of my drives, reinstalled openAL, tried running it with the sound devices disabled, any help would be greatly appreciated because in searching these forums and the steam ones I haven't even found anyone with the same problem. This also happens with the demo version. I run it on Windows 7 64 bit.

Not sure if this is helpful or not but thought i'd throw it on here just in case.

Hi castu,

Not sure if this is relevant, but it looks like you're running the "hemisphere" version of the game (ie. purchased from our website) but you mention running via Steam. Where/when did you download it from?

Thanks,
Eddy

I downloaded it from your website, as I was running out of ideas to make it work I just thought I would give it a shot launching it through steam. I got it a couple days ago, not too sure on the exact date.

Ok, thanks for the info. Hmmmm... based on the log and CPU usage, it may be an OpenGL driver problem. Please try switching over to D3D mode: http://www.hemispheregames.com/faq-pcos ... /#tech_d3d

If the Config.cfg file doesn't exist, create it with a text editor at the path indicated in the FAQ, containing the single line:
usingD3D "0"

btw, It's easier to troubleshoot problems if you run Osmos directly, as sometime the Steam client hides error messages.

Hope that does the trick! :)

Well I tried that and the first time I tried to launch it the screen went black for a second and then just back to the desktop like it was doing before. The black screen only happened the first time I tried, now if I try its just the same as it was before.

Ah, it looks like you're still running in OpenGL mode. Not sure what went wrong with the config file setup, but here's a sample file that should do the trick (using D3D):
http://www.hemispheregames.com/misc/Config.cfg
(if it shows up as text in your browser, just right-click and "save page as...")

Download and drop it into your My Documents\Osmos\ directory and try running the game again please. You should see "Initializing D3DRenderDevice" in the log instead of "Initializing GLRenderDevice".

Hope that does the trick!
