Thanks for your patience jeffplum! By 'memory corruption', we mean a code-level bug (either our code or a hardware driver's) that's wandering off and touching memory in a way that messes things up. It's really odd that only a handful of people have been experiencing this issue; so, this is why we're curious about people's hardware config, so that we can try to find some pattern to the bug. We're trying to track it down!

Thanks for your help and patience, all!

Couple issues with osmos on my computer (win xp).

First, it crashes every time I exit the program ("Osmos.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." .. exception code 0xc0000005). Second, the zone save does not work unless I complete all the levels in one sitting. That is if I complete one or two levels in a zone (zen attractors, ambient impasse, etc.) and then quit the program I've got to redo them when I go back to the program. Annoying.

Thanks for your post, onetrueboo. The shutdown crash has been fixed and will be rolled out into a Steam update soon.

Regarding zone completion -- You don’t have to restart each zone from the beginning every time you play it! As described in the Osmos FAQ, there are level buttons that appear below the zone when you roll over the button. The level buttons let you access each level individually, and they become unlocked as you complete each level, so that you can pick up from where you left off.

Enjoy the game,
Dave

Sjado, has turning on vsync solved this problem permanently for you?

Yes it actually has resolved the problem entirely. I used to get the upgrade screen the moment I would start the game (during the HEMISPHERE logo even). Turning on vsync totally fixed my issue. It has not returned at all.

- what OS you're running (XP/Vista/7), including service pack

XP (English), SP3 with latest critical patches installed

- your machine model and specs

Dell Inspiron 531:
2.33Ghz, 2GB memory

- your graphics card

Nvidia Geforce 7900 GTX, 512mb

- what version you're running: Steam or standalone (purchased from Hemisphere or D2D)
Running Steam version

Oh and everytime I'm now exiting Osmos, I get a OSMOS.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Here are the screens: http://img408.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=osmoserror1.jpg

It include a debug dump (contents of the .txt file it mentioned in the 2nd screenshot):

Not sure if the error encountered has something to do with this as an underlying issue. Let me know if you require more information..

Let us not forget that this game is GREAT! :D

Hi everyone

OS Microsoft Windows XP Professionnal SP3

DirectX 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c)
DXdiag tests OK

Gateway GT5016f
AMD Athlon 64 X2 DualCore 3800+, 2000 MHz
2048 MB

NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT (driver 6.14.11.9062)

Sound Blaster X-Fi (driver 6.0.1.1373)

Running steam version, "Steam Friends" turned off, "Vsync" turned on.
I first played at the demo then bought the full version on Steam.

Problem Summary
A flickering screen appears randomly, asking for an update.
After the steam update one week ago, the screen now thanks me for playing the demo version.
I can play for ~one hour without any problem, then the damn' screen appears and then it occurs more an more often.
Usually closing et re-launching the game is enough to kill the bug.
Sometimes, the bug persists and I have to close Steam.

I experience all the bugs you described except the wonky gravity effects.

Good luck in your bug hunting !

IronMike

Thanks for your spec info everyone. Looks like the common thread so far is WinXP + Nvidia GeForce. Anyone willing to try updating to their latest driver? It was released 9 days ago, and (according to their release notes) fixes some bugs which may well be causing this problem. If so, please get the latest from:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_190.62_whql.html

Thanks!
Eddy

Extreme slowness entering S1-2 update:

I waited patiently for the S1-2 level to start and managed to complete the level. I've been playing a while since then and the problem has not reappeared at another level. At least now I can enjoy the rest of the game!

Eddy,

I've installed the latest driver version yesterday and some of the problems happened today (the flicker bug, the zoom bug, and the slowdown bug).

Hello.

I just recently purchased the full version of Osmos as well (through Steam). Excellent game, but, unfortunately, I'm getting the same flickering 'Please Register Issue'.

I am about to try the v-sync work-around that has been mentioned - but I want to point out, that this issue is not nVidia only. I am running an ATI Radeon 4670, with current drivers.

My problem generally occurs within 15 minutes of playing. I'll be playing a level and, then I am haunted (or possibly hunted) by the 'Thanks for playing please update' screen. Sometimes it flashes in and out, occasionally it decides to flash in and out, and then eventually stay.

I am also however receiving the Windows system error about the program (Not exiting or whatever it says).

However, what I have played so far has been awesome... hope you guys can fix this.

Relevant system specs below:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+
2 GB RAM
Windows XP SP3
ATI Radeon 4670
SB Audigy 2

Hi Tazroth,

Thanks for the info. Not nVidia... hmmm... ok, there goes that theory. ;-) We'll keep hunting for a solution. :?

In the meantime, the exit problem is most likely sound related. Please try the following:

Go to the Osmos directory in the Documents folder and open the Config.cfg file. Inside, you'll find a line that says
soundDevice "-1"
Change this to
soundDevice "1"
so that the last device in your sound list will be selected.

Thanks,
Eddy
